Attend an info session to learn more about the summer 2023 study trip in Japan, sponsored by Oberlin's Luce Initiative on Asian Studies (LIASE) implementation grant from the Henry Luce Foundation.

The study trip will explore cultural dimensions of local and global environmental challenges in Japan. How do people and communities in Japan develop environmental literacy, the ability to understand, debate, and take steps to address such challenges as climate change, resource scarcity, plastic pollution, or biodiversity loss? How do arts, media, parks, religious sites, and museums promote knowledge of and connections to natural environments? The course and study trip will explore water, wood, and metal. Through these three themes, students will explore interconnections among culture, knowledge of the environment, environmental literacy and behavior in Japan in both historical and contemporary contexts. The study tour will feature meetings with environmental groups, policy experts, university students, and community members working to advance sustainability, along with visits to environmentally significant historical sites, gardens, parks, and other locations in Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyushu, and Hiroshima.

The study trip is open to students of all majors enrolled at Oberlin in spring 2023 and continuing in fall semester 2023. The trip will involve considerable walking through dense urban areas and sometimes rough natural terrain.

Tentative dates: May 24-June 9, 2023 (~15 days in Japan, with locations to include Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Kyushu, and Hiroshima)
