What can insults tell us about the ideology of a culture or society? In this talk, Deborah Kamen, associate professor of Classics at the University of Washington, will discuss status insults in Classical Athens, one of which includes a gibe at mercantile occupations.  Prof. Kamen’s work focuses on social history, including publications on gender, sexuality, status, and slavery in the ancient Greco-Roman world.
