As chemists, we often make assumptions about the integrity and non-reactivity of the containers and materials we use. This talk will review a real-world challenge discovered during the development of a new drug product. Borosilicate glass vials containing a novel drug product exhibited significant glass delamination during early development studies. This led to a major disruption and change in direction for the development of this product. Details of an investigational study will be shared to illustrate the approach taken to understand this atypical behavior and to establish improved guidance to avoid this type of issue in future drug development studies.
