archival photo of a group of people walking along a dirt road carrying backpacks and napsacks.

On January 2, 1980, nine Oberlin students began a 420-mile trek to retrace the Underground Railroad, a journey undertaken by enslaved black people that traversed through the back roads of Kentucky and Ohio and into Oberlin—toward freedom.

Herman Beavers ’81 will share his experience as one of the students who participated in the reenactment of that journey.
