Oberlin College's Program in Comparative Literature invites you to attend the annual JED DEPPMAN TRANSLATION SYMPOSIUM, held this year on Tuesday, April 18th-Wednesday, April 19th.

The events of the symposium include

  • Student-translator readings on Tuesday, April 18th, 5:00 PM, Craig Hall.
  • Keynote address on Wednesday, April 19th, 5:00 PM, Craig Hall.

Tuesday evening's student-translator readings is a vibrant occasion wherein Oberlin students share their original translations of literary texts from other languages and offer a few words on their approach to translation.

Wednesday evening's keynote address, "THE TRANSLATOR'S VULNERABILITY," will be delivered by LIESL YAMAGUCHI. Prof. Yamaguchi (Boston College) is the translator of Finland's national novel, Väinö Linna's Unknown Soldiers (Tuntematon sotilas), the first work of Finnish literature to appear in the prestigious Penguin Classics series.

Sponsored by Oberlin College's Program in Comparative Literature, Classics Department, English Department, The Oberlin Center for Languages and Cultures, & The Center for Russian, East European, and Central Asian Studies.
