Discrimination is any decision, act, or failure to act that is based on one of the protected categories listed below, and that substantially interferes with a person’s work or education.

Discrimination based on the following categories is illegal:

  • race
  • color
  • sex
  • marital status
  • religion
  • creed
  • national origin
  • disability
  • age
  • military or veteran status
  • sexual orientation
  • family relationships to an employee of Oberlin College
  • gender identity and expression

Discrimination also includes retaliation. Retaliation is any decision, act, or failure to act that substantially interferes with a person’s work or education when such decision, act, or failure to act is based on that person’s opposition to discrimination or that person’s participation in a process aimed at addressing an allegation of discrimination.
