After 30 years of service to Oberlin College, the Oberlin Technology Store will close its doors at the end of this semester

The Oberlin Technology Store first opened in 1987, and has sold computers and other technology products to faculty, staff, and students. Over the past decade, purchasing habits have been transformed by the Internet and the rise of online retailers. As a result, technology is more affordable, accessible, and available than ever before. While this is a good thing overall, the store has not been immune from the effects of this retail evolution.

In recognition of this reality and after much careful consideration, we have made this decision. The closure of the store will allow CIT to reallocate resources to better support the college’s mission through facilitating innovative applications of technology.

While personal retail sales will cease, the CIT Help Desk will continue to provide technology support in person as well as via telephone and email. CIT will also continue to repair hardware for Apple and HP computers. We will continue to honor warranties bought before the closure of the store.

CIT will continue to manage the procurement of technology for institutional use, including the replacement of computers for individual faculty and staff and institutional software licenses.

The Oberlin Technology Store will continue to operate from 1 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday until December 15, and by appointment only until December 21. The store will continue to accept returns until December 15, and does not plan to restock items once they run out. Selected remaining inventory after this time is expected to be sold at a discount; details on this liquidation sale are forthcoming.
