You may have heard news reports this week about two major computer security flaws called Spectre and Meltdown. Most computers and smartphones in the world use the affected Intel and ARM chips, and as a result are vulnerable to these flaws.

CIT is working to assess the risk these vulnerabilities pose to Oberlin College and plans to facilitate updates to College-owned computers as they become available.

To best protect your personal computers and smartphones, download and install any available updates to your device's operating system or web browsers. Because large manufacturers like Microsoft, Google, and Apple are actively working to mitigate the risk of Spectre and Meltdown, updates and patches may be released very frequently over the next several weeks.

We will provide updates as work to address these flaws continues.
