Summer Safety Tips
As the campus community transitions into the summer months, Oberlin College remains committed to your safety and well-being. Whether you are here for research, work, or to enjoy the quiet season, please keep the following safety reminders in mind:
Stay Aware of Your Surroundings
The campus may be less populated during the summer. Use well-lit paths, avoid distractions like earbuds when walking alone, and travel with a companion whenever possible, especially at night.
Secure Your Space
Always lock your room, apartment, or lab space, even if leaving for a short time. Do not leave valuables unattended or in plain sight. Consider using a lockbox for important items such as passports, electronics, and confidential materials.
Know Who to Call
Campus Safety is available 24/7 at (440) 775-8444. Call us for emergencies, safety escorts, or to report suspicious activity. Blue emergency phones are also located throughout campus and connect directly to Campus Safety.
Lab and Workplace Safety
If you are conducting research or working in campus facilities:
Follow all lab safety protocols.
Do not work alone after hours unless approved by your supervisor.
Use personal protective equipment and know the location of emergency exits and safety stations.
Hydrate and Protect Against Heat
Summer temperatures can be high. Drink water regularly, wear sunscreen, and avoid prolonged exposure during peak heat hours. If you feel dizzy or weak, seek a cool place and notify someone immediately.
Stay Informed
Make sure you are signed up for ObieAlert, the College’s emergency notification system. Check your Oberlin email regularly for updates or announcements from your department, supervisor, or Campus Safety.
Use Campus Resources
International students should remain in contact with the International Student Resource Center for support. Research students should maintain regular check-ins with their faculty mentors. Student workers should review emergency procedures with their supervisors.
Protect Your Digital Privacy
Avoid logging into sensitive accounts on public or unsecured Wi-Fi. Always log out of shared devices and keep your personal information secure.
Report Suspicious Behavior
If you notice unfamiliar individuals in restricted areas or encounter anything that seems concerning, contact Campus Safety immediately. Early reporting helps keep our campus safe.
