This is an operational notice advising that Oberlin College will reduce normal facility use significantly during the upcoming holiday period from Monday, December 24, 2018 until Monday, January 1, 2019. This reduction of all but necessary and essential services is undertaken to support key Energy and Sustainability initiatives by reducing utility and energy expenditures in buildings that are not occupied or have limited use. This in turn decreases CO2 emissions from our Central Heating Plant and our electric utility.
Frequent monitoring of building temperatures will take place during the entire break period by our Trades personnel. Though the schedule attempts to anticipate normal campus requirements and scheduled events during the break period, it is possible that certain activities and unique needs might have been overlooked. It is our intent that all critical needs be met. Should there be any concerns or special requests regarding the assigned use category, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
During this curtailment period, we also ask that equipment such as computers and printers that are not required to be left on, are powered down before you leave on December 21, 2018. Water conservation is also important. Please ensure that water sources are not left on or running. With buildings unoccupied or used intermittently, a source of running water could cause a great deal of damage to building materials, equipment and personal property. Curtailment efforts last year resulted in reducing the amount of fossil fuels consumed. We appreciate your continued support in helping Oberlin College conserve energy and eliminate wasteful operational practices.
Electric space heaters are available through the Campus Safety Office on a limited basis (first come first served). Space heaters may be signed out by providing general information and an Oberlin College ID. The space heaters are Oberlin College property, meet our insurer’s specifications for safety, and are available for a limited time and in limited quantities. Only college-owned space heaters are permitted for use for this purpose.
