Evening Activities

Spending the evening in Oberlin? Check out these available activities:

Time Activity
4:30 PM TGIF
Wilder Bowl
Every Friday after classes, Oberlin students gather in Wilder Bowl to kick back and relax before dinner. Rain location is the Dionysis Disco (The ‘Sco) in the basement of Wilder Hall.
5:00 — 6:30 PM Matt Gatton: Pré-pré-cinéma and the Dawn of Everything
Science Center, Craig Lecture Hall
Archeological reconstructions of Paleolithic animal-hide tents uncovered an unanticipated effect: light passing through small holes in the tents projected images on the interior walls. The holes formed camera obscuras. (A camera obscura may sound like a piece of modern technology but is, in fact, nothing more than optical physics behaving in a predictable manner.)

We researchers, armed with a modern knowledge of optics, explored the effect in situ, found it replicated in other tents, and used Bayesian statistical analysis to model the frequency of the phenomenon. How human antecessors would have reacted to the images is another matter entirely.

7:30 — 9:30 PM Bonfire for Admitted Students
Wilder Bowl
Hangout with your future classmates and other admitted students around a warm fire and make ‘Smores.

Junior Recital: Maya McCollum, TIMARA (Technology in Music & Related Arts)
Bibbins Hall, TIMARA Gallery
A junior recital presented by Maya McCollum. Admission is free. Conservatory visitors are asked to enter the complex through either Bibbins Hall’s east entrance (off College Place, across from the Oberlin College Bookstore) or the Conservatory Lounge’s west entrance (off S. Professor St., adjacent to the Conservatory Pond). All other entrances will be closed to the public.
7:30 PM Fridays at Finney: Music of Olivier Messiaen
Finney Chapel
This mini-festival features performances of two of French composer Olivier Messiaen's expansive works written between 1969-1974.

The Contemporary Music Ensemble, led by conductor Tim Weiss, will collaborate with solo pianist and Messiaen specialist Jason Hardink '97 in the extraordinary 90-minute Des Canyons aux Étoiles. Oberlin Conservatory organ professor Jonathan Moyer AD '12 will follow with Méditations sur les Mystère de la Sainte Trinité.
8:00 PM Shayna Punim
Kander Theater
Shayna Punim is a story about growing, changing, and discovering who you are after the death of a loved one. It encompasses Jewish tradition and ritual around death and the human urge to hold onto the ones we love after they have passed away. When Ava’s grandma, who she refers to as ‘Nonnie’ passes away suddenly, Ava must reconcile the fact that she is still finding herself, with the reality that Nonnie will only ever know a past, false version of who her granddaughter was. Shayna Punim takes place the hour before Nonnie’s shiva begins. When Hannah, Ava’s girlfriend, shows up to the shiva early, Ava is confronted with the difficulties of coming out to her family, and entering a new chapter of life when one so dear to her has closed. As Ava grapples with her identity and her loss, she begins to resent the people who love her for who she truly is.

Written and Directed by Clara Zucker '22. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at oberlin.edu/tickets.
8:00 PM Spring Back '22
Warner Center
A twice-annual tradition presented each semester, Fall Forward and Spring Back are designed around a central theme and feature the work of student choreographers. Directed by Talise Campbell, Visiting Assistant Professor of Africana Studies and Dance. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at oberlin.edu/tickets.
9:00 PM Soul Session
Lord-Saunders (Afrikan Heritage House)
Soul Session is a tradition at Oberlin’s Afrikan Heritage House that has been around since the 1970s. Soul Session is an opportunity for individuals to express themselves creatively through spoken word, dance, music, poetry, or song. Sometimes audience members are so moved that they toss shoes at the feet of the individual giving the performance to show respect and appreciation.
10:00 PM Oberlin Faculty Band Showcase
Wilder Hall, The 'Sco
Watch Oberlin Faculty Bands at the 'Sco on Friday, April 22 at 10:00 p.m.! Featuring The Pimms, Turtle Rabbit, and Halfway Cottages, this is sure to be a night jam-packed with amazing music! Doors open at 9:30 PM.
