BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION: A Student Patrol Officer is a student employee of the Safety and Security Office who works under the general supervision of the Director of Safety and Security. In meeting his / her day to day duties, the Student Patrol Officer is most directly responsible to the Safety and Security Shift Supervisor. The Student Patrol Officer is an extension of the Safety and Security Officer on duty and provides that officer with a wider range on campus. As additional eyes and ears of the Safety and Security Office, it is expected that "Student Patrol Officers are observant and visible. A student Patrol Officer is to observe and report ONLY!
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
Assists the Safety and Security Office in its role of protection of
life and property
Supports that the Safety and Security Office in complementing the academic
program and environment of Oberlin College
Encourages an environment which promotes safety and physical well being
of the campus community
Encourages respect for all people regardless of socio-economic status,
sex, race, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or handicap
Upholds and enforces the Oberlin College Statement and Code of Social
Responsibility
Participates in all training sessions including regular in-service
and sessions prior to each semester.
SPECIFIC DUTIES :
Maintains alertness and efficiency at all times with responsibility
to others and for others while providing secure environments for campus
Responds promptly and professionally in reporting requests from students,
employees and visitors for general and emergency support services to the Safety
and Security Office
Maintains a proper record of all substantial roving events in the activity
log and at the end of the shift in the Shift Supervisor shift activity report
Conducts walking patrol of the campus on an assigned shift and thorough
security checks of assigned campus facilities
Stays well informed and promotes crime prevention
Provides information or assistance in a courteous manner when requested
Reports promptly any violations of rules, regulations and policies
of the College or any safety, security, environmental or fire hazards to the
Safety and Security Supervisor or Officer on duty
Provides walking security escorts for members of the campus community
to and from any campus facility upon request.
Reports promptly to the Safety and Security Supervisor any illegal
or suspicious activity, criminal damage, or vandalism witnessed
Assists the communications Officer when necessary
Checks all lights on campus ground and on the exterior of buildings
Submits reports on incidents witnessed involving offenses or suspicious
circumstances
Patrols parking lots and ensures the security of motor vehicles
Assists in checking all courtesy / emergency telephones
Assists with providing security at special events as requested
Checks open windows, propped doors or doors left ajar
Conducts thorough security checks of assigned campus facilities
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director, Assistant Director,
or Shift Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a full-time student of Oberlin College
Willing to work flexible hours, and be primarily available between
the hours of 9:00 pm and 2:00 am daily as scheduled
Must be willing to work as scheduled through Commencement activities
after the end of second semester
Must be willing to occasionally substitute on short notice for call-offs
for illness or emergency
ESSENTIAL QUALITIES:
Knowledge of local and surrounding geographics; federal and state communication
rules and regulations; departmental methods and procedures; communication
equipment operation
Ability to deal with non-routine and unusual circumstances
Ability to make decisions using general guidelines set forth in Safety
and Security Office Policies and Procedures Manual
General knowledge of all college operations, in order to direct specific
problems / requests to appropriate office on campus

A Student Patrol Shuttle Driver is a student employee of the Safety and Security Office who works under the general supervision of the Director of Safety and Security. In meeting his / her day to day duties, the Student Patrol Shuttle Driver is most directly responsible to the Safety and Security Shift Supervisor. The Student Patrol Shuttle Driver is an extension of the Safety and Security Student Patrol on duty and fullfills all requirements and obligations of the Student Patrol Program. The Student Patrol Shuttle Driver provides transportation of students of the community to designated stops on a perimeter route of the campus safety and promptly via a vehicle provided by the Safety and Security Office. All Student Patrol Shuttle Drivers are required to perform their duties in a courteous and safe manner.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
Fulfills all general responsibilities of the Student Patrol Officer
Assists the Safety and Security Office in its role of protection of
life and property by participating in the safe transportation of students
and college community members to designated stops on a planned route
Supports that the Safety and Security Office in complementing the academic
program and environment of Oberlin College
Encourages an environment which promotes safety and physical well being
of the campus community through awareness of any peculiar activities observed

Maintains the shuttle service vehicle by keeping it clean and free
from damage; maintaining order in service while on duty
Participates in all training sessions including regular in-service

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Reviews routes and stops, driving techniques appropriate for conditions,
equipment, radio procedure, and instruction from Shift Supervisor on duty
Performs daily condition inspection of shuttle vehicle, confirming
condition, fuel, tire condition, cleanliness, fluid levels, operating performance,
condition and safekeeping of signs
Adjusts mirrors, checks operation of lights, signals, brakes, horn,
etc. before beginning tour of operation.
Operate vehicle within the requirements of the motor vehicle laws of
the State of Ohio and the City of Oberlin at all times, including but not
limited to use of seat belts, proper lighting, observations of speed limits
for safe conditions; observing required signals and stops; attention to defensive
driving techniques
Maintains regular contact with the Shift Supervisor and the Communications
Office in person and through radio operation to advise the assumption of rounds
and to check for pertinent information
Follows established shuttle route and approved alternate stops with
reasonable accuracy and on a reasonable time schedule
Distributes shuttle service information so that the ridership may understand
the provisions and limitations of the service. Distributes additional crime
prevention literature as provided by the Safety and Security Office
Avoids confrontational situations, requesting assistance from the Safety
and Security Office when necessary to address situations which might affect
the safety of the operator, passengers, vehicle or others while operating
the Safety and Security Shuttle
Maintains log of persons arriving and leaving the shuttle, along with
any pertinent information on activity and ridership totals

Must be a full-time student of Oberlin College
Must possess a current valid driver's license
Be at least 19 years of age and second year status
Meet college insurability requirements
Must be willing to work between the hours of 9 pm and 2 am daily as
scheduled
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION:
Student Commencement Staff are student employees of the Safety and Security Office, as funded through Commencement Programs, who work under the general supervision of the Director of Safety and Security. In meeting his / her day to day duties, the Student Commencement Staff Member is most directly responsible to the Safety and Security Shift Supervisor. The Student Commencement Staff will be involved with support services to Safety and Security at assigned posts.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Attend required Pre-Commencement staff meeting and any training session(s)
required by the Safety and Security Office
Must be available, willing to work and actually work any assigned times
during Commencement Weekend, Friday through Monday inclusive
Provide services for any on of assigned areas at assigned time:
Barricade Duty: Supplement Safety and Security service through
monitoring and controlling traffic at an assigned parking lot entrance, or
intersection during times lots and/or streets are closed for Commencement
functions. Allow passage of service and delivery vehicles; handicap drop-off
or parking, etc. as instructed. Reroute traffic to appropriate areas for parking.
Dispense limited information by making referrals to Commencement/Reunion Center.
Outdoor detail; can include day or evening hours in prevailing weather conditions.
Equipment Watch: Supplement Safety and Security services in
providing watch over Commencement rental equipment for safety of equipment
and persons in public areas near the equipment in support of Safety and Security
Office services. Report via radio to Safety and Security communications office
any activity which might cause damage, loss of equipment, or injury to persons
so a Safety and Security Officer may respond and take action. Outdoor detail;
can include day, evening, or nighttime hours in prevailing weather conditions.
Limited Traffic Control: Supplement Safety and Security services
in a stationary location on curb lawn across from Commencement / Reunion Center
to remind and reroute drivers to proper parking areas nearby; control traffic
as instructed at assigned barricade position. Day or evening hours; outdoors
in prevailing weather conditions.
Student Patrol: Provide visibility and accessibility to public while on walking
patrol in supplement to Safety and Security services. Dispense information
and referral to Commencement/Reunion Center or Safety and Security Office.
Report lighting and safety or security deficiencies observed to Safety and
Security communications office; provide breaks to students assigned stationary
positions.
Arrive at assigned time and remain at assigned area for duration of
shift
Sign in and out for assigned shifts; complete timecards and appropriate
student employment forms for position in advance of Commencement week
Perform all assigned duties to the best of ability without distraction
Maintain a courteous and respectful manner toward employers, fellow
employees, and guests of the College
Dress appropriately as defined by the employer
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a full-time student or graduating student of Oberlin College
Present a positive image of the Safety and Security Office and Oberlin
College in appearance, demeanor, and interactions with staff and visitors
Demonstrated dependability and punctuality
Ability to accept and follow directions
Appearance that is neat and clean
Ability to remain alert when working shifts
Good communication skills via radio and in person
Team player: Willingness to provide services and fill in the gaps
Knowledge of Campus layout and resources; ability to give directions
COMPENSATION:Prevailing Commencement Student Employment Wage. Room
and Board option as offered through Commencement budget in addition to wage.

Services Shuttle Service Safety and Security provides a stop-to-stop Safety and Security Shuttle
Service for members of the College community form 9:00pm to 2:00am
Sunday through Saturday each week of scheduled classes during the
Fall and Spring semesters. Ridership is open to current students,
faculty, staff, and guests of Oberlin College. The shuttle cannot
accomodate passengers who wish to run short errands and request the
driver to wait at planned Shuttle stops. Please call 7-775-RIDE (7433)
and give your name and location to obtain information on the arrival
of the shuttle. Additional escort service may be arranged directly
with the office. Emergency Phone System Oberlin College maintains a system of sixty-seven emergency telephones throughout the campus. Thirty-one of these are highly visible "" Blue Light" phones located in parking lots, high-traffic pedestrian areas, and campus open space locations. They can be easily located and identified by the bright blue light atop a mounting pedestal. The remaining emergency telephones are located at the primary entrance of each residential hall; some of the larger halls have emergency phones at more than one entrance. The automatic dialing capability provides direct contact with the Safety and Security communications officer to immediately dispatch a Safety and Security Officer. Safety and Security offers many additional services to the community.
