HISTORY OF THE RECYCLING PROGRAM

Ohio state requirements call for the diversion of all yard wastes from landfills and a 25% reduction in terminal solid waste.  In 1993, the Lorain County Solid Waste Management Committee and the County reached an agreement on a plan that would meet these requirements and the current city-wide recycling program, which includes curbside pick-up and special collections, was put into action.

In 1996, Oberlin College restructured its recycling program to focus on  decreasing the volume of landfill waste by participating in the city's recycling program and tailoring certain aspects to fit the needs of a college. BFI (Browning Ferris Industries) runs the landfill located about three miles east of the college on route 20.  BFI sorts and markets the city's mixed rigid recyclables, which includes glass, metal, and plastic containers.
