Lawrence P. Markowitz

OBERLIN COLLEGE

Welcome to my home page! I am Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Politics at Oberlin College.

I received my B.A. from State University of New York, Oneonta, M.A. from American University, and Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin-Madison. My teaching and research interests include nation- and state-building, civil war and political violence, and politics in Central Asia and the former Soviet Union.

My research has appeared in Ethnic and Racial Studies, Journal of Public and International Affairs, Central Asian Survey, and in several edited volumes. I am currently preparing a book manuscript that explores the effects of unlootable wealth on the coercive capacities of weak states, asking why some institutions of security fragment into autonomous agents of organized violence and others resort to coercive rent-seeking behavior. The book is tentatively entitled Unlootable Wealth and State Violence in Central Asia.

Prior to coming to Oberlin, I held a post-doctoral appointment at Georgetown University’s Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies.
