Teachers Keep on Learning

Oberlin News Tribune, June 23, 1998

To the editor:
Most people think that teachers have the summer off. We would like the community to know that 15 Oberlin public school teachers have been hard at work over the past week as participants in a workshop on "Oberlin History as American History: Enduring Questions, New Approaches." Funded primarily by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the project has focused on developing electronic resources for teaching history and other subjects in the schools.

We thank the many people who provided knowledge, skills and material, and support including James Gray, superintendant of Oberlin public schools; Larry Thomas, principal of Langston Middle School and other members of the Langston staff; John Memmott, talent development program; Patricia Murphy, executive director, and other members of the Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization; Terry Cook, Eva Greenberg and other members of the staff of the Oberlin Public Library; and Geoffrey Blodgett, A.G. Miller, Sarah Nelson, Benjamin Mack, Jessica Grim, Whitney Pape, Roland Baumann, and other staff at Oberlin College.

Most of all, we thank the teachers who took time from their summers to acquire new skills and new knowledge so that the children of our commmunity may learn more about Oberlin's past and prepare for its future. These teachers are Rebecca Beal, Gloria Buxton, Jan DeMarinis, Helen DuPont, Marcia Finch, Cheryl Gooch, Christine Marquis, Sue McDaniel, Cindy Moroney, John Randall, Walter Thompson, Michaelene Walzer, Frances Welburn, Gail Wood and Steve Zavodny.
