Building a Web Page

Organizing Your Files

If you create more than one page or if you add graphics to your web page you must organize yourself! Web page graphics are not in web pages but are linked to them. This means that once you add a graphic, that graphic must stay in the same relative location to your web page. If you move it to another folder or rename it, the web page will no longer be able to find the file! You must also upload the graphics file to the server!

Organize Yourself Before You Begin!!
1) Create a folder on your hard drive or on your floppy disk and name it "web page". This is your work folder!!!
2) Copy any graphics files you will be using into this folder.
3) Save all of your web pages to this folder.
4) Once you have done this, do not move them!!!
5) Give a copy of the folder to Gary Kornblith. He will upload your pages to the web server.

Finding Graphics

Buttons, bullets and icons!!! Check out the following sites for Clip Art resources.

The Icon Browser

Webtools - The University Of Rochester Libraries have compiled an excellent collection of web guides, graphics and clip art.

  Grabbing Graphics

1) In Netscape, click and hold on the graphic you would like to grab from another Web site.
2) A menu of options will pop up. Choose "Save this image as...".
3) Save the image to your work folder (see above).
**Remember. Graphics belong to the artist unless otherwise stated. If you use someone else's graphic, be sure to give them credit!! If a web page specifically asks you not to copy their artwork, respect their wishes.

Adding a Graphic in Claris Home Page

1) On the desktop, drag your graphic into the same folder as your web page file.
2) In Claris Home Page, click the Insert Image button on the toolbar or choose "Image..." from the insert menu.
3) Locate your graphic using the dialog box. Click Open. The graphic should now be inside your web page. **Very Important! Once you have inserted the graphic into your page, do not delete the graphics file!

Customizing Your Page

Changing Background, Text and Link Color

1) In Claris Home Page, choose "Document Options..." from the Edit menu or click the Document Options button in the toolbar.
2) The colors displayed on the Document Options dialog box are the current colors for the page. Click once on a color to choose a new one. You can change these colors at any time.

Adding a Title

In general, you should always give your web pages a title (separate from a file name). This title appears at the top of the browser window everytime someone opens your page. When people bookmark your page, the title you have given your page is the title that appear in the bookmark list.

To give your page a title

1) In Claris Home Page, choose "Document Options..." from the Edit menu or click the Document Options button in the toolbar.
2) Enter your title in the box provided. Click Okay.

File Naming

Correct file naming is ESSENTIAL when constructing a web page. Macintoshes allow you to name files anything you want - long names with spaces. Web servers and browsers, however, are really picky. So here goes:

Naming Your Web Page

All web pages must end with .html or .htm

There can be no spaces in the name. For example you can name a file

mypage.html or my_page.htm

but not

my page.html

Graphics Files

Web browsers understand two graphics (picture) types - GIFs and JPEGs.

A GIF file must end with .gif

mypicture.gif

A JPEG file can end with either .jpeg or .jpg

mypicture.jpg

or

mypicture.jpeg
