Symposium on "Our Common Center: Historical Images of Downtown Oberlin"

On November 15, 2000, the Electronic Oberlin Group and the Oberlin Historical and Improvement Organization hosted a free public symposium at the Oberlin Public Library to introduce our new online database of downtown images, titled "Our Common Center." Speakers included Steven Litt, Art and Architecture Critic of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Marilyn Fedelchak Harley of O.H.I.O., and Gary Kornblith of the E.O.G. Support for this program was provided by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Stocker Foundation.



Ohio Humanities Council Awards Grant to EOG

At its September1999 meeting, the Ohio Humanities Council awarded the Electronic Oberlin Group $12,500 for the project "Our Common Center: Historical Images of Downtown Oberlin." The project will build on our currently featured exhibit "Downtown Oberlin: Past/Present."



Community and College sponsor John Mercer Langston symposium

A free public symposium on John Mercer Langston and Oberlin's African American Heritage was held at Oberlin's historic First Church on September 26, 1998. The event was cosponsored by O.H.I.O., The Friends of Freedom Society (Ohio Underground Railroad Association), the Oberlin College African American Studies and History departments, Oberlin College Archives, members of the Oberlin Student Cooperative Association and others.



Teachers Complete Oberlin History as American History Workshop

The workshop, "Oberlin History as American History: Enduring Questions, New Approaches," ended Friday, June 19. Oberlin College was awarded $24,832 by the National Endowment for the Humanities to run the multisession workshop, which helped members of the Electronic Oberlin Group work with local public school teachers on identifying innovative ways to integrate Oberlin history with the teaching of American history.



Community Celebrates Evans House Dedication

On April 7, 1998, Bruce Babbitt, Secretary of the United Sates Department of Interior, attended a community ceremony observing the dedication of the Wilson Bruce Evans House as a National Historical Landmark. The Evans brothers were noted abolitionists and played a role in the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue of 1858. Their house was a center of the Oberlin African-American community in 19th century.



The Chronicle of Higher Education features Electronic Oberlin Project as Town-Gown Model

The November 19, 1997 issue of Academe Today, the daily electronic version of The Chronicle of Higher Education, included an article by Kelly McCollum titled "History of Oberlin College and Town Comes Together on Collaborative Web Site." The article appeared in the printed issue of The Chronicle dated January 16, 1998.



Ameritech Awards Oberlin Grant for "Teaching and Building Community in a Digital World"

As part of its program of Partnership Awards for Independent Colleges, the Ameritech Foundation has awarded Oberlin College a grant of $15,000 to teach college students how to collaborate with K-12 students and teachers in using the Electronic Oberlin Group Website and other electronic resources. Professor Carol Lasser, a member of the EOG, will oversee implementation of the grant. Click here to view the Ameritech press release describing the program.
