Renaissance winds:The Conservatory's set of five Renaissance recorders is "state of the art," according to Associate Professor of Recorder and Baroque Flute Michael Lynn. "In the area of historical performance, many students study the baroque counterpart of their modern instrument. It's important for the institution to supply a good collection like this. This way a student can learn about an instrument before making an investment in one," he said. This set was made by Bob Marvin of Quebec. They are constructed in the style used in the 16th century, with two holes at the bottom position to accommodate both right- and left-handed players. Today, Lynn said, everyone plays the same way and so one of the holes on each recorder is plugged.
