Gongs from the gamelan: Among the instruments in Oberlin's Javanese Gamelan are these kempul, knobbed gongs forged of bronze. The large gong at the back is an heirloom instrument believed to be approximately 100 years old. The entire gamelan consists of numerous bronze gongs and keyed instruments from central Java in Indonesia. Students who enroll in the Javanese Gamelan each spring learn to play Javanese court music. The ensemble frequently performs at Mayfair, a campuswide celebration of spring.
