Oberlin College Women's Studies Program

The Phyllis Jones Memorial Award

The Phyllis Jones Fund was established through gifts from students, colleagues, and friends of Phyllis Jones (1945-1982). Phyllis Jones was a member of the English Department and Chair of the Women's Studies Committee during its first four formative years. She contributed bravely and profoundly to the education and growth of women in the college and community.

This annual award in her name recognizes and honors student work in areas related to Phyllis Jones's interests: women writers, minority women, women in the community, and the integration of personal and professional goals for women.

Entry categories include:

1. Written work such as a research paper, a portfolio of creative writing, or an honors thesis;

2. A service project which can be described and documented in writing;

3. Work in the performing or visual arts which can be documented through writing or performance

Application Procedure

All entries must be complete upon submission. Both single applicants and group projects will be considered. Any student currently enrolled at Oberlin College, as well as Spring 1995 graduates, may apply. Submissions from both divisions, College and Conservatory, are welcome.

Applications should include the following:

1. A personal statement of 500 words describing the applicant's course of study, non-academic activities, and general interests;

2. An abstract of no more than one page describing the relationship of the work or project to the above stated goals of the Phyllis Jones Memorial Award.

3. The name, address, and telephone numbers of two people knowledgeable about the project or, if that is not possible, about related work the student has done.

4a. In the case of written work, submit two typed copies. The maximum length is 35 pages. A selection of chapters or sections from longer papers is acceptable.

b. Service projects should be described in a typed statement (7-page maximum) which provides an analysis of the work's significance.

c. Projects in the visual or performing arts should include a written description of the work (5-page maximum), and where appropriate, photographs, slides, or tapes. Applicants in this category who are chosen as finalists will be notified to arrange a review of the project.

Complete applications and materials for the award must be submitted by Tuesday, April 2,1996 to the Women's Studies Office, Rice 34.

Recipients of the award will be notified by late April, 1996.
