Program Description

The Upward Bound Program at Oberlin College is a national pre-college program funded through the U.S. Department of education. It is designed to assist secondary youths from low-income families and/or who are prospective first-generation college students, to develop their potential and success for post-secondary education. Students who are currently in the ninth, tenth and eleventh grades are eligible to apply for Upward Bound upon the recommendation of school counselors and teachers. If selected, students remain in the program from the time of admission through high school graduation. Students receive follow-up services during their attendance at their post-secondary institution.

Program Services

Based on student assessment, individual programs are developed for each student's educational needs.

Tutorial assistance for individual and/or small group sessions focusing on high school courses.

Academic instruction and academic, career, and personal counseling are provided during the school year and during the six-week summer program.

Students receive instruction in taking standardized tests for the Ohio Ninth Grade proficiency exam and for college admissions (SAT & ACT).

Academic year group sessions that provide information on career and life planning; college selection and financial aid; academic learning skills (test taking strategies, study skills, reading, and communication skills improvement).

Visitations to colleges and universities, cultural activities, and student leadership conferences are provided.

Participate in a six-week residential summer component at Oberlin College which includes basic academic skills, courses in English, math, science, foreign language, writing, developing skills in fine arts, performing arts, and athletics.

Students receive a monthly stipend determined by their participation and satisfactory progress towards their individual goals.

Parent activities are available to provide assistance in preparing their child for success in high school and post secondary education.

Where is the Oberlin Upward Bound office located?

Our office can be found in the Stevenson Building (marked by the blue star below) on the campus of Oberlin College. We are in the center wing (Griswold), suite 133.
