College announces decision to terminate GTEP.

Citing budgetary reasons, the Oberlin College administration announced the decision to terminate the Graduate Teacher Education Program, effective at the end of the 2009-10 academic year. Applications are no longer being accepted, and the current cohort will be the last to receive their M.Ed. and teaching licensure through Oberlin College.

Second GTEP Cohort Ready for the First Day of School!

The graduate students in the second cohort of Oberlin College GTEP (Graduate Teacher Education Program) have officially begun their fall internships in the Oberlin city public schools, attending training sessions and teacher workshops in preparation for the first day of school next week. After spending the summer months hard at work in their graduate classes, the GTEP'ers are eager get into their classrooms, meet their students, and begin the next phase of their journey toward becoming licensed public school teachers. They will work in the schools three days a week this fall, and continue to take a full load of graduate courses in the other two days.

GTEP's First Cohort Graduates In Style!

On Monday, May 25th, Oberlin College granted the Master of Education degree to the nine members of the inaugural cohort of the Graduate Teacher Education Program. To many, it was a very significant day, as those nine new teachers are the first licensed (non-music) teachers that Oberlin has sent out into the world since the MAT and undergraduate teacher programs were disbanded in the early seventies. Oberlin Launches Graduate Teacher Programs

In 1839, Lucy Hall, a senior in the Ladies Course, perhaps set the bar for all Oberlin teachers who came after. Despite vigilante threats, Hall persisted in her desire to teach and proceeded to take charge of a school for students of color. That same passion for imparting knowledge in the service of social justice continues today. Next June, the first group of teaching candidates will begin rigorous preparation for careers in education by embarking upon the new Master’s degree programs established by the College and Conservatory of Music.

Class of 2007 Endows Resource Center in Oberlin Public Library

In an outstanding show of enthusiasm, the Class of 2007 raised funds to endow a resource center in the Oberlin public library that will be used by several College programs, including the SITES program, which engages Oberlin students in Spanish-language tutoring in the community, the upcoming Graduate Teacher Education Program, and other student mentoring programs. The 2007 class gift broke records in both size and number of participants, with more than half the class contributing to the $36,000 effort.
