Brief Professional Biography
Kathy Ganske has spent her professional life in education as a classroom teacher, college professor, writer, speaker, and consultant. She has taught in the Midwest, the Rocky Mountain states and the Mid-Atlantic region and, most recently, was a professor for ten years at Rowan University in New Jersey, where she taught literacy courses to graduate and undergraduate students.
Her rich background of experiences as a classroom teacher (ranging from teaching primary through upper elementary grades, in open as well as contained classrooms, and from rural to more urban settings) has informed her work with college students and practicing teachers and her research. Learner engagement and motivation, appropriately challenging instruction, integration of literature, and teachers as informed and reflective decision makers are integral themes in her work.
She has authored/coauthored several books, among them Word Journeys (Guilford, 2000), Supporting Struggling Readers and Writers (Stenhouse, and the International Reading Association, 2002), and the forthcoming Mindful of Words. (Guilford) Her current scholarly interests are focused on comprehension, critical thinking, and critical literacy.
What about the wider perspective of life? When not engaged in professional activities, Kathy enjoys reading and discussing literature, listening to music, bicycling, and taking walks in the woods.
