Brief Professional Biography
Prior to arriving at GTEP in August of 2008, Christa coached varsity basketball at the collegiate level for 20 years, including the previous six years leading the Oberlin College Yeowomen. The transition from recruiting undergraduates to recruiting graduate students has been a smooth one, and she credits that to the strength of the GTEP faculty and curriculum, as well as to the fact that Oberlin is a great place to live, to learn, and to grow. “Oberlin is quite a unique town, chock-full of diverse and challenging people of all ages,” she says, "and I can’t think of a better place for aspiring teachers to learn to lead a classroom."

Champion earned her undergraduate degree in bio-medical engineering at Brown University, and her master’s degree in exercise science and sport studies at Smith College. In between, she played semi-pro basketball for two years in Ireland, where she had the opportunity to read Joyce with David Norris at Trinity, and study Yeats under Gus Martin at UCD. Christa is a writer of both prose and poetry, and her dream is to someday become a novelist (a dream which sometimes can seem unreachable, as it would necessitate actually finishing an entire draft of a novel). At the moment, the genre she is working in is the three-minute pop song, in her role as vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and fledging songwriter for a rock-and-roll band called Backbone (“not your average neighborhood feminist garage band”).

Christa welcomes all inquiries about Oberlin and GTEP, and she looks forward to continuing to bring interesting and talented people to what will soon be known as one of the best teacher preparation programs in the country!
