Nathan Engstrom

Nathan began serving as Oberlin’s first sustainability coordinator on February 1, 2007. Prior to that he was employed by Wisconsin Environmental Initiative, a Madison based non-profit, where he was the Program Director of Green Built Home, a voluntary green building initiative that reviews and certifies new homes and remodeling projects that meet sustainable building and energy standards. Green Built Home was named 2006 Green Building Program of the year by the National Association of Homebuilders.

Nathan has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Environmental Studies from Northland College, Ashland, WI (’99) and a Masters Degree in Sustainable Design from The University of Texas at Austin (’03). Mr. Engstrom’s previous experience includes working as an energy services advisor for the Wisconsin Energy Initiative 2 program, providing design assistance and materials selection for UT’s entry in the 2002 Solar Decathlon design competition, and extensive research on most of the nation’s green building programs.

Nathan also recently co-wrote a chapter, “The Social Construction of Green Building Codes: Competing models by industry, government, and NGOs�, with Dr. Steven Moore from The University of Texas which was published in the book Sustainable Architectures and is also a co-founder of GreenStar Homes, a small residential construction and development company specializing in sustainable building techniques.
