This page is hosted on the Oberlin server. For security reasons, the Oberlin server doesn't allow the use of PHP or MySQL, the most common ingredients for a database.
So, in order to provide a searchable database that is reasonably easy to edit, we had to resort to javascript. If you're trying to drive a nail, anything can be a hammer.
