Yeomen place 14th at Wooster Invitational
By Ryan Silakoski

Last weekend the Oberlin golf team traveled to the Wooster Country Club for the Parlor Restaurant/College of Wooster Invitational two-day tournament.

Facing tough competition and foul weather yet again on the first day of the tournament, the Yeomen placed 14th out of the 15 teams present at the tournament, edging out Hiram by 25 stokes.

However they still managed to turn in a score of 725 on the weekend. Unfortunately for the Yeomen, the tournament champion, Muskingum College, scored much lower with a total of 620.

Despite the showing, sophomore Prithvi Reddy felt that the team played much better.

“I definitely feel that the team is getting into the groove of things,” he said, “and most of us are a lot more comfortable with the way that we’re playing.”

Clearer skies on the second day of the tournament allowed sophomore Tom King to turn in a respectable showing, shooting a low score of 82.

There were some upsets in the tournament, however, as Muskingum College took the title away from four-time champion Otterbein College, clinging to a very close lead at the end of the first day of play.

On the second day, the fight for second place was intense, with Denison, the top NCAC team, losing to Otterbein College by merely one stroke.
Wittenberg College first-year Dane Sandbridge turned in one of the highlights of the tournament, shooting a hole-in-one on the 168-yard eighth hole.

Next weekend the Yeomen will travel to Ohio Wesleyan for their invitational, which will include many of the teams faced at the Wooster tournament.

“I think many of the teams we played last weekend will be at the tournament this weekend and the host, Ohio Wesleyan, is usually the team to beat,” Reddy said. “And they have their home course advantage.”

This weekend is the final tournament before the NCAC Championships, which will be held at Oberlin College.

This gives the Yeomen the advantage that they have been seeking all season.
