The Oberlin College men’s tennis team looked to bounce back from their March 2 loss to Ohio Wesleyan as they hosted Mount Union College on Thursday, March 6.
With a chance to earn a winning record, the Yeomen showed up to take on the Purple Raiders.
“We are putting the other matches behind us,” sophomore Mark Knee said going into the match on Thursday, “and turning our focus to Mount Union.”
The Yeomen definitely had that focus as Oberlin earned a 7-0 win in their third shutout victory of the season.
Leading the way was junior captain Jamie Frankel, who defeated Mount Union’s Joe Libster in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
Frankel’s season at first singles has gone well thus far. His undefeated record this season ranks him among the top players in the conference.
In other singles action junior Marian Bocek defeated Ryan Ruthsatz, 6-2, 6-3 at the two spot. In third singles sophomore Nick Ogren came away with the victory over Brian Workinger after a hard-fought battle, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Sophomores Mark Knee and Brad White also came away with big victories, defeating Mount Union’s Phillip Wachholz, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Andy Keller, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, respectively. First-year David Cotter, also undefeated on the season, came away with a convincing win over John Caporaler at fifth singles, tallying up a 6-1, 6-0 score.
In doubles action the Yeomen also displayed fine form. The combination of Frankel and Cotter defeated Mount Union’s top combination of Libster and Workinger 8-4.
Bocek and Ogren battled their way to an 8-6 victory at second singles, while third singles was dominated by the duo of Knee and first-year Jimmy Rosenheim, who won the match 8-2.
With the win the team moved up to a 3-2 record, a vast improvement from the 1-4 showing they had posted after their first five games last season.
Next on the schedule for the Yeomen is Walsh University in Canton, Ohio. The Cavs began the season with four straight victories, but have dropped their last two. The Yeomen will be looking to score a big win over a good team tomorrow.
