Anti-Zionist posters hateful
To the Editors:
I write out of concern about the anonymous anti-Zionist epithets plastered
around campus lately. It seems as though OBSAD (Oberlin Students for Anonymous Dialogue, or some
variation), the promoters of these messages feel that vandalizing campus property with anti-Zionist
rhetoric is an appropriate form of expression and dialogue. I beg to differ. This anti-Zionist
propaganda (Zionism is Racism, Zionism is Genocide, and Zionists
are Nazis), is an example of hate speech and should be viewed as such. OBSAD and others are
grossly misusing the privilege of anonymity to promote intimidating and hateful messages, while
masking their intentions under the lofty guise of free speech. The writers of these statements
have embarked upon a campaign of harassment, targeting and silencing those students who care about
Israel and who care about peace. Meaningful dialogue is vital, and mutual recognition is key, but
these types of messages cannot bring about either anonymously or otherwise.
