Cinema gets with the program

By a unanimous vote, College faculty decided Tuesday to turn the Cinema Studies major into a full-fledged program. “This means there will be a group of faculty who are completely dedicated to Cinema Studies,” Professor of Cinema Studies William Patrick Day said.
The popular new major has grown substantially since lifting off in November of 2001, but its course offerings are still limited by the number of professors teaching in the major. As a program, Cinema Studies will now be able to hire its own faculty, and in turn create more courses. The next step, Day said, is “to consolidate what we’ve done, make sure the major is running right and decide what kinds of projects we want to implement.”

CIT to improve server service

People with websites on Oberlin’s servers will find a few changes in store for them when they return to campus after Spring Break. The Center for Information Technology will be upgrading the College servers, bringing users more disk space and greater flexibility in dealing with files. There is one change that might cause some confusion, however — websites will now have new addresses. The CIT urges anyone with a website on an Oberlin server to visit http://www.oberlin.edu/migration, which describes the changes in detail.

OCAW walkout gaining steam

Approximately 750 Oberlin students have pledged to join the National Student Walkout for Day-X, due to take place at noon the school day after the U.S. bombing commences in Iraq. The Oberlin Coalition Against the War expects an 500 students have not signed the pledge sheets.
“The OCAW goal is 1500, so we are happy with the results so far,” OCAW organizer Marianna Leavy-Sperounis said.
The group is presently planning meetings with Oberlin public school officials to discuss prospects for involving Oberlin High School students in the walkout.
“We fully encourage and support students who choose to walk out and hope that those who do not walk out will attend events once the school day has ended,” Leavy-Sperounis said. A protest is scheduled for shortly after noon on Tappan Square, to be followed by a march.
