The Wiz, directed by Caroline Jackson Smith, was much more than just an African American adaptation of Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. It was a fairy tale web that engages the audience right from the moment when Auntie Em’s rich, smooth voice entered the hall to Dorothy’s last note.
The structure of the play was supported less by the dialogue than by the vitality of music and dance. The sense of rhythm was so catching that audience members were tempted to jump out of their seats or at the very least sing along.
Junior Janice Reddick gave a sterling performance in her portrayal of the trusting and innocent Dorothy. Her singing voice was exceptional, particularly in her moving debut with the lion (played by senior Jamon Holt).
Humor was the common thread throughout the play, running through dialogue, song and dance.
Junior James Anderson brought a new meaning to the word funny in his truly exceptional performance as Scarecrow.
The Tin Man (played by junior David Hughey) was brilliant, especially at the end as he pleads in defense of love.
First-year Ethan Baldwin did not just act but sounded and looked the part of the flamboyant Wiz.
The witches were enchanting. They managed to win the audience over with their wit and talent.
Afrikan Heritage House artist-in-residence Adenike Sharpley’s remarkable choreography ranged from tap to African dance.
Particularly exceptional was the dance sequence when the monkeys tried to capture Dorothy and her friends in order to bring them to Eviline.
The music assumed a unique voice that could be heard throughout the play. The change from one genre of music to another was done so smoothly that one could barely tell when the actual transition took place.
All in all it was a fabulous production and will be a great way to spend a Saturday night after a long first week of classes.
