Indoor
Track Team Revs Up
by Julie Johnson
The Oberlin womens indoor track team finished
second at the Case Western Reserve University Invitational last Friday.
Junior long-distance runner Laura Feeney set the team up for a great
2002 season. In her stellar performance in the arduous 3000m run on
Friday, Feeney won the event with a fabulous 10:42.12 run and set
an Oberlin indoor record. Overall, the team was strong, finishing
second out of six teams with a total of 110 points.
It turned out to be a good night, said Feeney. I
ran decently, though split-wise, it was not one of my best races.
The team had a great season in 2001, finishing third in the North
Coast Athletic Conference and with three members qualifying for the
NCAA Division III National Championships. With the anticipation of
improvements in the middle distance crew and growing strength in all
events, coach Tom Mulligan is looking forward to a powerhouse team
across the board.
As a team, were doing really well, said Feeney.
Were really looking strong, and the freshmen are impressive.
The hurdlers are expected to be an especially kicking group this year,
headed by senior co-captain Apryl Wynn, who has finished second in
both the indoor 55m and the outdoor 100m, and ninth overall at the
NCAA Championships. Junior co-captain Vicki Alla, who placed eighth
in the NCAC last spring, and sophomore Sarah Bennett are heading up
the middle distance racers.
The first-years are drawing attention with solid skills, versatility
and anticipated future performances. Among a whole team of notables
are hurdlers Leslie Bosworth and Teresa Collins as well as middle
distance runners Shannon Morris and Renee Walsh.
Today the team hosts the Oberlin Invitational. Case Western Reserve
University, Cuyahoga Community College, John Carroll University, Muskingum
College and Otterbein College are attending. The team feels prepared
and calm.
Its schools we dont race very often. For me, I try
to just run my own race, Feeney said. Overall, people
are working on their own style and technique.
The Oberlin Invitational is today, Feb. 8, at 6 p.m. in the John Heisman
Club Field House.
