Women’s Kickers Top CWRU
by Rob Smith

For the Oberlin women’s soccer team, last Saturday, Sept. 29 was one of those days they dreaded to lace up their spikes. Facing off against Ohio Wesleyan University, the best team in the NCAC and the sixth-best in Division III, the Yeowomen knew from the beginning that it would get ugly — the only questions were how ugly, and how quickly. The damage in each half was equally bad, with Oberlin allowing five goals in the first half, past first-year Alison Palmer and five in the second half, past senior Julie Noyes, en route to a 10-0 defeat.

The Lady Bishops took 28 shots on goal on the day, while the Yeowomen were able to manage none on a solid OWU defense. Katy Shurtz, Sarah Monroe and Meaghan Foreman all scored two goals for Ohio Wesleyan, while Liz Sheelman, Erika Hawlard, Emily Bayer and Krista Rutrot each scored once. With this tough loss the Yeowomen fell to 3-5-1 on the season overall and to 0-2-1 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

“They [Ohio Wesleyan] were an impressive team and it was tough to match up against them,” first-year Leah Frederickson said.

After a tough opponent and a tough loss against Ohio Wesleyan the girls were more than ready to face a Case Western Reserve team that was more on their skill level. On Tuesday Oct. 2 the girls looked for a bit of redemption against Case.
Case came into Oberlin with an overall record of 5-5, but Oberlin was ready for a win. Senior NCAC player of the week, Becky Kanuch, started off the scoring with a goal in the first half, with the assist coming from sophomore Tessa Stevens. The women went into half time with a solid 1-0 lead. Case Western started off the scoring in the second half and tied the game at one apiece, but that is as close as they would come. Junior Courtney Stackhouse assisted Kanuch for the goal that put the Yeowomen up 2-1, and they would not look back from there. Stackhouse and Kanuch reversed rolls on the last goal of the game as Kanuch assisted Stackhouse, and the Yeowomen get back in the win column with a solid 3-1 victory over Case Western Reserve University.
“It was really great to get a win after two tough losses” said first-year Holly Rousmaniere. With a big game Kanuch now leads the Yeowomen in points with 25, and in assists with seven. Stackhouse is close on her tail though with 22 points and a team leading 10 goals to Kanuch’s nine. First-year Allison Palmer found herself minding the net once again for the Yeowomen. Once again she played great.
Palmer made nine saves in her 90 minutes of play. She averages 8.67 saves per game and has a goals against average of only 2.46.

With this big win, the women get their momentum going in the right direction getting ready for conference foe Wittenberg University on Saturday, Oct. 6.

“This was a win we need to get to go into this week ahead of us,” said Rousmaniere. The girls improve their record on the year to 4-5-1. They are now within one win of reaching the all-important .500 status.
