Baldwin
Creates Safe Spaces
To
the Editors:
As
the 2001-2002 school year begins, the Baldwin Womens Collective
would like to introduce ourselves to the campus. We are 26 women
of varying backgrounds with a wide spectrum of understandings and
personal definitions of feminism, but we speak as a house on the
issue of safe spaces. Baldwin has historically functioned as a safe
space for women and we would like to let you know what those spaces
are and what that means. This year, the Womens Collective
has decided to make certain spaces within the house safe spaces
for biological and gendered/trans-identified women.
These spaces are the piano lounge, the second floor lounge and the
second floor bathroom. The function of these spaces is to include
biological and gendered women from all over the campus, not to exclude
men. As this is the first year and the first step in the process
of trans-inclusivity in Baldwin, we ask that you respect these spaces
and the people who choose to use them. All members of the community
are welcome in the rest of the house and we encourage everyone to
visit Baldwin!
