Spikers Face Dissapointment in Road Trip, Look for Redemption

Yeowomen Will Seek Additional Motivation

by Ian Haynes

The Oberlin Volleyball team had more than just jet lag to worry about with matches against both Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman University on Sept 9. Each Powerhouse dropped the Yeowomen in three straight games. The losses in California dropped the Yeowomenıs record to 4-4 for the season, although they have yet to begin conference play.

Trouble presented itself in the form of two veteran teams opposing the Yeowomen. In the first match, the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer swiftly took the first game 15-2.

³We came out flat against Pomona,² said senior Sarah Breon. ³We couldnıt seem to get motivated.² In the second game the Yeowomen looked better, but couldnıt quite control the net. This resulted in a 15-10 loss, putting them down 2-0 to Pomona-Pitzer.

³It wasnıt that we werenıt passing well, but not converting good passes into an aggressive offense,² stated Breon. ³We have spent a good portion of our recent practices working on being more aggressive at the net.²

In game three, the Sagehen front line proved to be too much for the Yeowomen, as they combined for 21 kills and helped Pomona-Pitzer seal the match with a 15-7 victory.

For the Yeowomen, juniors Anna Ruth and Alana Kenmore led the way with eight and six kills respectively. Senior Carrie Carter and first-year Eden Trenor both chipped in with three kills each.

Also doing their part offensively for the Yeowomen were sophomore Mariana Padias with nine assists and first-year Darci Leonhart with four. However, Oberlin couldnıt compete with the high number from Pomona-Pitzer, whose senior Erika Gamst tallied 25 assists alone.

Both teams played well defensively. The Sagehens totaled 37 digs, shadowing Oberlinıs 21 digs. For the Yeowomen, Ruth recorded eight, Kenmore tallied seven and Breon had six.

In Oberlinıs second game on Saturday, the Yeowomen met up with the Chapman Lady Panthers. The Lady Panthers came into the contest with all six returning starters from last season.

The experienced Chapman team proved too much for the Yeowomen, winning in three matches 15-9, 15-4, 15-10.

Unfortunately the Yeowomen were up against the cannon of Lady Panthers senior Erin Dedic who has the second highest number of kills of all time at Chapman University.

³I feel we are in good shape to face conference teams because the reams we have been facing are at a higher lever,² said Trenor.

³Hopefully what we have learned from losing will transfer over to conference play.² The Yeowomen will play their first conference match against Hiram on Wednesday, Sept 20.
