Yeomen Win Two out of Threeby John Damron
So far the menıs soccer team has made promising strides in some areas and discouraging mistakes in others. After this week, the Yeomen finished with an overall record of 2-3, and 1-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. The Yeomen mightıve just gotten the wakeup call they needed last Sunday. They traveled to cross-state rival Marietta College and came away with an impressive 3-0 victory. The following Wednesday they hosted Walsh University, and despite a great collective effort, they walked away losing 5-1. The team has played inconsistently thus far one minute theyıre cruising smoothly along but the next they hit a rock too big to dodge. Last Wednesday, that rock was Division II power Walsh University. The great Vince Lombardi once said, ³Itıs not whether you get knocked down, itıs whether you get back up,² and the good thing is the Yeomen are still in the infancy of their season. If they rebound now they could have a great year. Head Coach Blake New expressed hope that the team can pick up the pieces before the conference schedule kicks in on the 19th at Allegheny College. After a convincing win against Division II Marietta, the Yeomen met a rock right in their own back yard. They returned home to face the Cavaliers of Walsh University. However, the Yeomen were still battling with the Cavaliers for most of the game, until Walsh got a couple of insurance goals in the second half that put the game away.
New summarized the games, saying, ³We just werenıt mentally prepared like we shouldıve been,² also stating that the team seemed, a little cocky prior to game time. Oberlin has shown signs of excellence in a 3-2 win over Baldwin-Wallace, and their tough, yet competitive losses to Mount Union and to Muskingum. Tomorrow the Yeomen will travel to Carnegie Mellon, in a non-conference match-up, and return to North Coast Athletic Conference competition Tuesday, when they face Allegheny College in Pennsylvania.
