Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Feb. 3, 9:50 a.m. An officer received report from a vending company of products missing from the vending machine at Langston Hall. Missing was approximately $8 in various products.

Feb. 3, 8:29 a.m. An officer responded to report from a staff member of graffiti on the east wall of the Allen Art Museum. The graffiti was in black spray paint and had a "tag" on it. A work order was placed to remove the paint.

Feb. 4, 9:20 a.m. An officer transported a staff member to the hospital after slipping on a snowy sidewalk in Stevenson Lot, injuring her back and left shoulder.

Feb. 4, 10:25 a.m. An officer received report from a vending company of approximately $11 worth of candy bars from the vending machine at Langston Hall.

Feb. 4, 5:16 p.m. An officer responded to report from a staff member of an unknown person hitting the cement post outside the east end of Burton Hall. The Grounds Department was notified of the damage.

Feb. 4, 6:55 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Allencroft. The alarm was activated by smoke from cooking.

Feb. 4, 7:48 p.m. An officer responded to report from a staff member of an injury while working in the Environmental Study Building. The worker's back was injured. Medical treatment was denied at that time.

Feb. 5, 1:57 a.m. An officer responded to report from a student requesting assistance with an intoxicated student, who fell striking his head, near Stevenson Hall. The student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Feb. 5, 6:59 a.m. An officer transported a staff member to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment after cutting her finger with a new knife.

Feb. 5, 1:13 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of the theft of his wallet, which contained a driver license, ID car and ATM card, from his unlocked locker at Hales Gym.

Feb. 5, 8:10 p.m. An officer responded to a student staff member at Langston Hall who turned in a commando type found on a ledge just outside of Langston Hall near the south entrance. Oberlin Police Department was notified.

Feb. 5, 11:02 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Langston Hall. The alarm was caused by a detector malfunction.

Feb. 6, 1:24 p.m. An officer responded to a request from a student for assistance with her ill roommate. The student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Feb. 6, 1:02 a.m. An officer reported a strong odor of marijuana on the first floor of South Hall. Students said the odor was the result of a burned out light bulb.

Feb. 7, 4:40 p.m. An officer responded to report from a staff member at Mudd of skateboarders "tricking" with their boards in the loading dock area. A skateboard was confiscated from one juvenile who had been warned on numerous occasions, and released to his parent.

Feb. 7, 1:50 a.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of the theft of his duffel bag, which contained his Motorola cellular phone valued at $500 from his locker at Philips Gym. The theft was reported to the Oberlin Police Department.

Feb. 7, 9:09 a.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in East Hall. The alarm was activated by excessive heat in room.

Feb. 7, 3:20 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of the theft of clothing, gym shoes and prescription glasses from unlocked locker at Philips Gym. A Hispanic male, medium build, medium height, wearing a large winter parka and carrying a backpack was observed quickly leaving the area of the theft.

Feb. 8, 8:20 a.m. An officer transported an ill student to Urgent Care from treatment of flu symptoms.

Feb. 8, 10:05 a.m. An officer responded to a report from an Oberlin City Street Department employee after he backed his truck into the emergency phone at the end of Johnson House Drive, striking the box and bending the pole.

Feb. 8, 5:00 p.m. An officer responded to a report from an alumni of the theft of black leather work out gloves and a pair of Reebok sneakers from the men's locker room at Philips Gym. Value of the missing items was estimated at $90.

Feb. 9, 5:00 p.m. An officer responded to a report from a student of the theft of her bicycle, a red, men's Performance Mountain bike, from the north side of Talcott. The bicycle was unlocked at the time of theft.

Feb. 9, 10:27 p.m. An officer and the Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Talcott. The alarm was activated by smoke from cooking.
