Yeowomen capture third seed in NCAC tournament

The women's tennis team continued its success with the season coming to a close. With a 14-6 record the team is now seeded third going into the NCAC tournament.

The Yeowomen garnered another victory Saturday when they defeated the Lady Gators of Allegheny College. They won three of the six singles matches and two of the three in doubles. Senior co-captain Leigh Ann Totty led the Yeowomen in their efforts by smashing her opponent 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Claudia Martinez added to the success by defeating her opponent 6-0, 4-6, 6- 1.

Coach Don Hunsinger commented on Martinez' success, saying, "Claudia had two dominate sets but the middle was a let down. Junior Jill Brockleman also beat her opponent 6-2, 6-4. The other three singles players were not a successful in their efforts. [Senior co-captain] Tara [Sievers] had a really good match but she just ran out of gas in the third set."

In the doubles matches OC won two out of the three. This effort was headed by the first seed Totty-Sievers duo, who defeated the Allegheny team 8-2. The second-seed team of Martinez-Brockelman had a little more of a struggle but still won their match 8-5. "Both of the first two doubles teams played really well," Hunsinger said. The team of sophomores Beth Krupski and Robin Richardson were not as lucky as to win their match."

"Robin and Beth carried our team last week, but this week Leigh Ann and Claudia had to step up. That is what being on a team is about." The Yeowomen won the match with a score of 5-4.

Wednesday night the women went against John Carroll University. Hunsinger said that this was by far the teams worst match of the season. Totty started off on a good note defeating her opponent 6-2, 6- 1. But once Martinez ended up having to default her match the team seemed to loose its spark. The Oberlin team lost all of the doubles matches and only won three of the singles. The final score of the game was 6-3 in favor of John Carroll.

This weekend is the NCAC tournament for the ladies. They anticipate tough games against top-seeded Kenyon and second-seeded Denison. The conference tournament starts today at Wittenberg.
