Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

April 22, 3:30 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to report of two males scaling the north wall at King. Subjects were located and advised to come down; both complied.

April 23, 2 a.m. Safety and Security Officer, while on building patrol, observed water in the basement of Philips Gym near the mechanical room. A water valve was located open and turned off.

April 23, 7:08 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to a fire alarm in the kitchen of Fairchild. Grease buildup in the oven tray caused a small fire. Fire was extinguished and the tray thrown away.

April 23, 10:52 p.m. Safety and Security Officer and Oberlin Fire Department units responded to a fire alarm on the third floor of Baldwin. Cause was smoke from a burned pizza.

April 24, 12:05 a.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to a report of two students being verbally harassed by an unknown person in the North Hall/Zechiel area; subject could not be located in the area. Matter under investigation.

April 24, 1:23 a.m. Safety and Security Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a report of smoke detectors sounding and an unidentifiable odor at College Rental house. The boiler was found to have overheated activating the detectors. Physical Plant staff were notified for repairs.

April 24, 2 p.m. Safety and Security Officer and Residential Life staff responded to request of student for advice on safely carrying out a performance art performance at South loading dock that was being interrupted by objects dropped from windows.

April 24, 3:52 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to a student ill during a rehearsal at the Conservatory. Student was transported to Urgent Care for treatment.

April 24, 8:45 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to report of a theft of a backpack from Hales Gym. Bag was later found in the building with contents intact.

April 25, 12:05 a.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to report of a chemical reaction set off in a 2-liter plastic bottle on the sidewalk outside Langston. Matter under investigation.

April 25, 2:30 a.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to a request of staff to check on two underage (13 years of age) teens attempting to attend a party. Children left before officers arrival, but were advised by staff their age prohibited them from attending.

April 26, 7:25 a.m. Safety and Security Officer found a broken basement window in the Service Building while on patrol. A work order was placed for repairs.

April 26, 5:24 p.m. Safety and Security Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at the Service Building garage. Cause was found to be water dripping on a detector. Electrician was called out for repairs.

April 27, 11:30 a.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to report of a possible suspicious person on the east side of East Hall early in the morning. The person was described as a white male, 30's or 40's, 5'11, possible beard, curly brown hair and wearing tan pants and a pink-maroon button-down shirt. The subject appeared to be counting windows. Matter under investigation.

April 27, 8:30 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to theft of a wallet from the men's locker room at Philips Gym. Taken was a grayish tri-fold wallet which contained pictures, ID's, receipts, bank card, PA drivers license and approximately $40 cash. Wallet was later located in the restroom; all items intact except the money.

April 27, 6:38 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to report of a theft of musical instruments from the third floor lounge of South Hall. Taken was a small guitar, a Gorilla brand amplifier at music stand and music. All items were later located and returned to owner.
