John Carroll rallys past Oberlin 5-4 in season opener

Leigh Ann Totty blanks opponent 6-0, 6-0

John Carroll University snuck past the women tennis players last Saturday losing the nine game event 5-4.

"The primary reason for our losses is that we are not mentally prepared to win matches," said double degree fifth-year Kathy Hertzer, who lost her match 7-5, 6-4. "It was a tough match but I just didn't pull through. She had good strokes," she said.

The other team was strong," said senior Kate Petersen. "I think the matches were a good first step, but mental preparation takes longer than physical." Petersen lost her match 6-0, 6-0. Say cheese

Head Coach Don Hunsinger said, "The team was totally nervous., They have to be more mentally prepared and our conditioning is not where it should be. Physically they're not where they need to be right now. It's partly conditioning and partly injuries."

Conservatory junior Tara Sievers defaulted a game because of a wrist injury.

Hunsinger said John Carroll's team had vastly improved, and that it was hard for the team to understand this as John Caroll has never beaten Oberlin before.

Out of the remaining games in the singles category first-year Gayle Nadorff lost 6-4, 7-6, with a tie breaker of 7-1. Sophomore Jill Brockelman won with a score of 6-4, 6-3. Junior Leigh Ann Totty won her game with the highest margin, blanking her opponent 6-0, 6-0.

Hunsinger said "Leigh Ann played the best match, you can't win by a higher margin. She won love-love."

In the doubles category Oberlin won two games and lost one. Totty and Sievers won 8-5. Brockelman and sophomore Aeli Jeon won 9-8, with a tie breaker of 8-6. Nadorff and first-year Beth Krupski lost 8-4.

"Our two first years, Nadorff and Krupski, playing doubles, performed very well for their first time playing in a college match," said Hunsinger.

As Hertzer said, "The team needs refinement."

The team plays Saturday against Carnegie Melon University at home.
