Security Notebook


The following is a compilation of weekly reports from the Office of Safety and Security.

Feb. 16

2:49 a.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of annoying phone calls to a student. Matter is under investigation.

3:25 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of the theft of money from an office in Rice Hall. Matter is under investigation.

5:05 p.m. Safety and Security Office and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at East Hall. The cause was spray deodorant which activated the alarm.

10:10 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of a suspicious person in Talcott. It was learned that the subject was a friend of students in the building. He had left prior to the officer's arrival.

Feb. 17

1:39 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of vandalism to a television at Burton. Matter is under investigation.

5:00 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a reported theft of reading glasses from Wilder Hall. Glasses are Flexy Bens, brown tortoise shell in color, and valued at $500.

6:39 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a fire alarm in Johnson Gallery at the Art Museum. A leak in a sealer on the roof drain caused activation of the alarm.

9:46 p.m. Safety and Security Officer and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the basement of Talcott. Cause of the alarm was smoke from kosherizing pots. Alarms were reset.

Feb. 18

1:04 a.m. Safety and Security responded to a reported theft of a basketball from the men's locker room in Philips Gym. Basketball was a Spalding Official NBA, valued at $70.

5:20 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of a theft of a wallet from Philips Gym, swim team locker area. Wallet was a brown bi-fold and contained credit cards and a GA drivers license.

8:36 p.m. Safety and Security Officer responded to a report of a theft of jackets and clothing from the locker room. Taken was a beige Reltec jacket, valued at $110, a blue and orange Florida Gators jacket, valued at $50 and a wallet containing approximately $50 cash.

8:15 p.m. Safety and Security responded to report of a stolen backpack from Mudd, fourth floor. Backpack was a maroon Jansport, valued at $40, 2 textbooks valued at $150 and miscellaneous items.

8:15 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of a stolen wallet from a bookbag. Brown leather wallet, $95 cash and miscellaneous items.

9 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a reported theft of a bookbag from A-level area. The bookbag was later recovered; $25 cash was missing.

Feb. 19

4:55 a.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at North Hall, third floor. A trash can near the elevator was found on fire and was extinguished. Matter is under investigation.

11:30 a.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of an accident involving a College rental car. There were no injuries.

4:30 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of a theft from Philips Gym locker room. Taken were a pair of bib overalls with a one dollar bill in the pocket.

9:37 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of a stolen wallet from Philips Gym locker room. Matter is under investigation.

2:55 p.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Stevenson Hall. Cause was a malfunction in the system.

5:28 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of missing keys for Philips Gym. Matter is under investigation.

Feb. 21

6:33 p.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Allencroft, second floor. Cause of the alarm was burned food on the stove.

8:34 p.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in South Hall. Cause of the alarm was cigarette smoke.

Feb. 22

1:01 a.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in Keep Cottage, second floor. Cause was found to be a malfunction in the system.

4:37 a.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at Burton hall, first floor. A bulletin board near the main entrance doors had been set on fire, activating the alarm. Matter is under investigation.

2:02 p.m. Safety and Security Officer, while on patrol, observed two suspicious subjects in the area of Wilder Hall and Philips Gym. The subjects attempted to enter Philips Gym but did not have valid ID's. Matter is under investigation.

3:56 p.m. Safety and Security and Oberlin Police Department responded to a security alarm at a College-owned house on Woodhaven. House was checked and all found to be OK.

4:52 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a reported theft of a green leather wallet from Philips Gym locker room. The wallet contained $80 cash, credit card and validine. Matter is under investigation.

6:20 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a reported theft of clothing from the hallway outside the racquetball courts. Taken was a gray coverall suit, blue scarf and a white carrying bag. Matter is under investigation.

Feb. 23

3 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a reported theft of credit cards from a coat at Philips Gym. All items were later located and returned to the owner.

5:02 p.m. Safety and Security Officer, while on patrol, made contact with several juveniles seen in the area. Everything checked OK.

Feb. 24

7:57 p.m. Safety and Security responded to a report of an ill student in Dascomb Hall. Student was transported to Allen Memorial Hospital emergency room for treatment and then released.
