Men's tennis 1-1 last Sat.

by Leigh Ann Totty

The men's tennis team is 6-12 in their spring season. They were 1-1 in a doubleheader last weekend at home. The men beat Wittenberg University 5-2, but lost to Allegheny College 6-1. Against Wittenberg, Oberlin swept number three through six singles. Sophomore Sam Steckley and Sophomore Mike O'Connell defeated the Tigers. Numbers five and six, Co-captain sophomore Peter Swendsen and sophomore Eric Shin needed three sets to beat their opponents.

Coach Chris Barker said, "In conference matches, our number one and number two players will be facing tough opponents, so if we are strong in the bottom half of our lineup, we can win our matches through the back door." Oberlin also captured the number one and two doubles. Steckley and Swendsen defeated their opponents 8-5.

At number two doubles O'Connell and Ebersole dominated over the Wittenberg Tigers 8-1.

Against Allegheny, the Gators came out on top. Co-captain senior Koji Ebersole, at one, had a difficult match against Howell; he lost 6-0, 6-2. The first four singles played tough, but the Gator lineup was more consistent on the match up day.

The only singles win came from Swendsen, at number five, his scores were 6-4, 7-6 (7-1). The match of the day was at number six singles where Shin battled against Mike Walker. After losing the first set 6-4 Shin won the second 7-5, but was overcome 6-0 in the third. Doubles was also unkind to the men. The number one duo of Swendsen and Steckley beat Howell and Paat 8-6.

Unfortunately, the number two doubles team of captain Ebersole and sophomore O'Connell were unable to close out their match when they were up 6-1. The final score was 8-6.

The men have one more conference match at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday. Their North Coast Atlantic Conference championships are May 2-3 at Case Western Reserve University.
