Men's rugby full of die-hards

by Fernando Bretos

Last weekend, at the Ohio Rugby Classic Tournament in Columbus, the men's rugby club team, "The Widemouth Beasts" played what prop senior Jeff Kurzweil called "die hard rugby."

Although they lost all three of the matches they played, they left their mark on and off the field with an attitude of sportsmanship and determination rivaled by no other.

Oberlin's first match, against Xavier University, ended in a 12-7 loss for the Beasts. Good tackling proved vital as Oberlin's defense provided few holes for Xavier's backs to penetrate.

Despite many injuries, Oberlin finished the match with a score late in the match. Oberlin's efforts came up short, however, as the whistle blew before Oberlin could score again.

Oberlin's next opponent was Chicago Blaze's B-side, a men's club who provided a heavy task for Oberlin.

Prior to the match, things looked bleak for the Beasts. Not only were they a young, inexperienced club, but Chicago's team appeared highly skilled and experienced, and were a good deal bigger than the Oberlin side.

"Prior to the match, we were a little concerned about their size and ability, but we sucked it up and played hard," commented sophomore wing Keet Wong. Despite falling 17-0 by halftime, Oberlin shutdown Chicago in the second half and had several opportunities at scoring.

"I was proud of the overall effort, particularly of our defense" added battle scarred senior Alek Silverblatt after the game. "We played at their level and showed them what Oberlin rugby is all about." Even more impressive is the fact that the Chicago club which Oberlin played was the backup side to a team who was playing in a national tournament a few miles away.

Sunday morning's match found a weary Oberlin side playing Kenyon in cold, windy conditions. The fatique showed as Oberlin fell 17-0 to the Lords in a grueling match.

Overall, the Columbus tournament proved successful for the Beasts. A valiant effort was displayed by Oberlin in all three matches by a young, improving team. Oberlin has two mtaches remaining for the remainder of the season.

This Saturday, Oberlin will be playing Wooster on North Field.

The men's rugby and water polo stories were both written for cluc corner by members of their respective teams.
