People need to listen

To the Editor

Reading last week's Review, I was impressed with the letters of Steffany Haaz and Sarah Park on the subject of "reverse exclusion". Unlike the typical whines on the subject, these were both thoughtful and moving. Then, this week, I saw a copy of "trembles our rage," an anonymous publication explaining to prospies how Oberlin is no haven from the old-fashioned kind of discrimination and exclusion. Again, these pieces were not only well-written but well-considered, and they expressed the pain and dissapointment of coming to a place where the image is so far above the reality.

In both cases, I was saddened by what I learned from the plaints. Nevertheless, I am glad that they were expressed. I'd like to put a feel-good ending on this letter: "Isn't Oberlin a great place, where people can say these things." But good writing and a comforting semblance of symmetry aren't enough for people to reach a middle ground.

Yes, it's nice that, at Oberlin, these views can be articulated. But unless enough people listen, it is not enough. If you can do so, please read the letters and the booklet.
