Government referendum could restructure Senate
The student Senate debated what items toinclude on the reform ballot on Sunday. Senators discussed the issue of stipends for senators and its role on the ballot.
Ebonics lecture defines the dialect
Howard Mimms, professor of African-American Studies at Cleveland State University, spoke about the ebonics debate Sunday. He raised linguistic issues and criticized popular outcries against ebonics from people who do not understand the debate.
CDS surveys discussed at committee meeting
Residential Life is circulating two surveys designed to define students' opinions and suggestion on the current state of campus dining. The first survey was designed to gather student ideas about structures and meal plans while the second survey was aimed at assessing student opinions on the quality of the food.
SLC discusses proposed changes, downsizing
The Student Life Committee (SLC) met to discuss committee restructuring that members hope to enforce in the near future. A proposal suggests to eliminate 9 of the 18 SLC committee positions in an attempt to downsize the committee.
Charges result of incident which killed high-schooler
Former Oberlin student Jonathan Drake hit and killed 16-year-old Creighton Green, an Oberlin High School student while driving by the Oberlin golf club last June.
Kids benefit from OCS tutoring program
18 Oberlin students spend Monday and Wednesday afternoons tutoring, mentoring and simply spending time with fourth-graders at Prospect Elementary School. The tutoring program, no in its tenth semester, is organized by OCS, and coordinated by two Oberlin students.
Final planning reports turned in to President Dye
Long range planning teams are submitting their reports to the president and college community. Faculty and student organizations will comment on the reports and submit suggestions to the committees for consideration.
Counseling center hires two
The counseling center is hiring two new staff members. Diane Britt and Harry Pepper were hired in November to replace Mary Anderson-Miller and Britte Friedman who left last year.
Clothing drive serves community
The campus Newman Community finalized a two month clothing drive. The program is a revival of an older program which Newman sponsored about eight years ago.
