Hunger strike in effect to raise awareness

To the Editor:

In protest against animal experimentation at Oberlin College, a group of students are undertaking a hunger strike, to begin Thursday, April 3, at 1:30 p.m., the time at which the rats will be introduced for experimentation in the Neuroscience 211 lab, continuing until Friday, April 18, at 4:30 p.m., when these particular experiments cease for the semester. For all the participants, fasting will consist of a diet of only water and fruit juice. Three students will be fasting for at least the first four days of the overall hunger strike, while at least eight other students will each be fasting for one or two days of each week of the strike in a rotating cycle. Through this hunger strike, we hope to bring greater, more serious, and more compassionate awareness and attention to the issue of animal experimentation, and to the sentient lives that continue to be violated and sacrificed behind laboratory doors at Oberlin College.
