Ronald Takaki was key-note speaker at the all campus convocation Tuesday. Dr. Takaki recounted the struggle for multicultural course requirments at UC Berkely. He called for Oberlin to create an Asian-American Studies program and rethink the curriculum.
36 faculty sign letter condemning package
An anonymous package containing information concerning David Holtzman's hearing on a preliminary injunction was mailed to random faculty members.
Monthly and unannounced inspections aimed to reduce violations
Student rooms will be inspected in surprise fire inspections once a month starting this semester. Fire violations have been a large problem in the dorms in the past, and previous inspections have been ineffective.
Wendy Kozol chosen to fill vacant advanced tenure-track position
Wendy Kozol was hired as the new Professor of Women's Studies after the search process was criticized in anonymous fliers. A search is proceeding for a second permanent position within the program.

The Student Life Committee leadership is unclear after last semester's election of student and faculty co-chairs. Chapin Benninghoff, College junior, was elected co-chair along with Chris Howell, Associate Professor of Politics in November.
Safety and security search for Asst. Director started
The Department of Safety and Security is hiring an assistant director to coordinate day-to-day operations of the department. The assitant director will be responsible for parking enforcement, supervising, and scheduling both officers and supervisors and other tasks.
Charges found College did not follow grievance procedure
The College and a union which represents over 180 College employees reached a settlement last week on issues that arose from charges filed against the College last May. The College had failed to address employee grievances timely but relations were amiable between the two parties.
One student charged with two misdemeanors
College Security officers found three marijuanana plants left in dorm rooms at the end of last semester. The first of the finds resulted in the owner being charged with two misdemeanors while the latter two are being routed through Judicial Board.
