Rhino Ruggers lose, but players get experience

Though members of the women's rugby team can't recall the actual score of their first game, they know they didn't win.

"We were scored on a lot," said senior Helen Barnes, who plays second row in the scrum. "We didn't score at all."

"I didn't keep track [of the score]," said women's rugby club president senior Tara Ikenouye.

Wittenberg scored most of its tries (estimated to be around six) on breakaways, though the Ruggers won around 95 percent of the scrum downs. "It was an even contest," Ikenouye said.

Ikenouye and Barnes attribute the loss to the team's inexperience. "If we play them again,we'll beat them," Ikenouye said. She said that many members of the team are new this fall and have never played in a rugby game before. "Everyone played really well," Ikenouye said.

Barnes said the Rugger's strengths and weaknesses were on display. "We had a lot of spirit and a lot of spunk. People were really into playing the game." What the team has to work on, Barnes said, is skills.

This Saturday the Ruggers play in a tournament at John Carroll.

Equestrians open season

The Yeoriders, Oberlin's club equestrian team, weren't horsing around last weekend at their season's first show.

At Saturday's meet at Miami University, junior Kristen Pohlman took first in the beginner walk-trot competition.

Junior Katayoon Hodjati was 2nd in the intermediate fence event and 5th in intermediate flat. First-year Heather VanAelst was third in intermediate flat and 5th in intermediate fences. Junior Shuna Klaveness finished 6th in novice fences.

This year's team has 15 to 20 competitors, but junior Ellen MacPhearson Cheeseman, the club's treasurer, said the squad is still looking for warm bodies to ride.

The Yeoriders wrap up their fall season Nov. 9-10 with another Intercollegiate Horse Show Association show at Miami.

"We ought to do a little better because we usually hit our stride on our second day of competition," MacPhearson Cheeseman said.
