Oberlin track team taken by storm

Dreams of victory were dashed by uncooperative weather

by Hanna Miller

An athlete enters competition planning to do her best. And if it's April, she usually doesn't plan on snow.

No wonder T.S. Eliot called April the cruelest month. Last week, the track team's hopes for success were chilled by the bitter cold. "It was really, really cold," said sophomore Amie Ely. "It was insane." The meet was halted after a few events because of the adverse conditions.

The track quickly became useless for running as snow blanketed the surface. "They were running the steeplechase, that crazy thing," said Ely. "People were running around in their little shorts jumping over little puddles, and it was freezing."

The teams were able to complete the 1500-meter and 4x100-meter races. The Oberlin men's team claimed a third place finish in the relay, but their time was slowed considerably by the storm.

After the meet was cancelled, the Oberlin teams headed home to practice.

Saturday marks Oberlin's first home meet of the season. Walsh College, the College of Wooster and Wilmington College will compete. With one eye on the weather and one eye on the competition, Oberlin is looking forward to the meet. "It looks real good," said sophomore Steve Jackson, "Everybody's ready, everybody's looking forward to it, especially with the good weather."

Jackson said, "I can't wait."
