Woman rack up .500 record over Spring Break trip, fall in first game back

by Jeff Glickman

After weeks of playing on indoor courts, the Yeowomen finally got to take their game outside. The women's tennis team racked up a 4-4 record over Spring Break on outdoor courts. Of course biting bugs added a slight damper to the complete bliss.

On March 15 the Yeowomen traveled to Otterbein College for its first outdoor game. In a tight match, the Yeowomen edged Otterbein 6-3. In doubles competition, the first team of vice-captain junior Bethany Pribila and captain senior Helen Kang secured Oberlin's sole victory, winning 8-6.

The next day the team traveled to Wittenberg College for its first conference match. Oberlin swept the doubles competition to take a 3-0 lead.

All the singles matches were decided in straight sets. Pribila, Kang, and Sievers delivered wins for the Yeowomen. Bradford lost in the closest singles match 7-6, (9-7), 6-4.

The third doubles team of sophomore Kate Peterson and senior Julieta del Rio pulled out the closest doubles match 8-6 after trailing 6-2.

For their Spring Break trip, the Yeowomen set out on a drive south. After a full day's drive, the Yeowomen were tired by the time they played Emory University. The team played hard, but Emory won convincingly 9-0.

The doubles team of Pribila and Kang took a 6-3 lead in the only close match of the day, before falling 9-7.

The Yeowomen rebounded the next day to dismantle Agnes Scott College 7-2. The team won five of the singles matches in straight sets. Sievers faced an undermatched competitor and did not lose a single game, winning 6-0, 6-0.

The Yeowomen took on Colby College in their first game at the Four Seasons' resort in Hilton Head, S.C. on Tuesday. Colby won 6-3. Pribila and Kang accounted for all of Oberlin's points, each winning her singles match and combining to win number-one doubles.

The Yeowomen rebounded the next day to conquer Baker College 8-1. Bradford, Sievers, del Rio and Kubo all had closely contested matches. Sievers won 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Kubo fell in two close sets 6-4, 7-5.

The Yeowomen's first match after break was against mighty Kenyon College on Tuesday. Kenyon ranks among the best of Division III, and showed it against Oberlin. The Ladies won 9-0. Pribila, Kang and Sievers all won the first set of their singles matches before falling in the second two.

Pribila said, "It was pretty encouraging to have so many close matches against a team as good as Kenyon."

This weekend the Yeowomen might face Kenyon again, as they travel to the Great Lakes Conference Association tournament. The teams are very strong and the Yeowomen will get some heavy competition.
